What would you do if you were told for the next six months you would have to live in a ghost town with people you’ve never met?
Along with seven strangers, Dymphna, is chosen to receive a good-sized inheritance. However, in order to actually obtain the inheritance, these eight people, along with a range of animals must live in Fat Chance, Texas. A seemingly impossible and worthless task, each are given a specific role and must come together to make something of this abandoned town.
This heart-warming read had me hooked from the beginning. Told in alternating character perspectives, the plot proves to be unique and kept me engaged the entire length of the novel. There is something about needing to depend on others in order to survive in a town where everything is in bare bones (no TV, internet, etc.) that makes me smile.
What I especially loved here is the author’s ability to bring life to each character. Even though there was so many introduced at the same time, I did not have trouble keeping track of them. All the way from goth-girl Polly to spunky and snoopy Old Bertha, I loved every one of them.
What helped keeping track of these characters were not only their personalities, but the animals that were associated with them. Dymphna with her farm animals, Professor Johnson with Thud, his lovable dog, and a few others that I won’t spoil. This was such a clever and extremely method from the author to assist readers in identifying each character.
At times, I did keep wondering how much romance would be written into the story. Though there are some, the scenes were sweet with stolen kisses and mainly the interactions between the folks in Fat Chance, Texas. In other words, this book has some romance, but it’s not heavy on the topic.
I received a free copy of this book from the JGBS Review Library in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are my own and no compensation was received.
