After forty years of marriage, Olivia and Ben’s life together is cut short when an unfortunate accident takes Ben’s life. However, with his passing he left a secret behind. A secret that he’s been keeping from his family for years. One of their babies isn’t a biological one, but one who was switched at birth when the newborn did not survive.
When deciding on the next step, Olivia spends time with each of her five sons, Caleb, Matt, Zach, Teddy, and Ethan, before breaking the news. What she discovers is that there are more secrets within her family than she realized. How can one person handle so much in such a short amount of time?
The author did such a great job in developing his characters and really making the reader feel for each of them. Cleverly, the protagonists had his/her own chapters and some that were combined, which made it easy to keep track of the six perspectives. Diving deep into each character, there was a range of emotions I went through: sadness, intrigue, happiness, curiosity, shock, love, and so much more. Everyone was developed well and had a beautiful arc. The only person that didn’t have as much of a in-depth storyline was Olivia’s sister, Diane. She acted as a support system for Olivia, which I thought was great and very much needed, but I felt bad that we didn’t get to her as well.
When considering the plot, one word – wow! My heart was thumping and my eyes were darting across the pages to find out what was going to happen next. I will say that there were times I had to pause in my reading because there was so much happening and I needed a break. This isn’t a “bad” thing; there was just so much harsh reality in one book that I needed to decompress for a bit before continuing, lol. I will say that I absolutely looked forward to reading this one every time I picked it up.
Overall, this was such a deep, thoughtful, and very family-oriented type of story. As I have said, it was one that was a joy to pick up and one that provoked so much emotion. When an author can make you feel that much, then you know you have a great one on your hands! Definitely will be checking out his next book!
