Here is yet another Christmas-oriented book review that I’ve read, but haven’t written a review about yet!
Genre: Classic/Holiday/Romance/Short Story
Publication Date: December 10, 1905
Themes: Christmas, Love, Marriage
All Della wants to do is give her husband, Jim, a wonderful Christmas present. The only problem is that she only has $1.87 to get him something, and she feels this isn’t enough. All Jim wants to do is get Della the best Christmas present, too. They both sell something special to them in order to make the other happy.
This was an interesting one to read, for sure. I do like the overall concept of the story – each one giving up something in order to make the other happy. It was also clear that the newlyweds loved one another.
I did wish the book was a bit longer and more developed. Since the story is told through the eyes of Della, we get to know her a bit better than Jim. However, in general, they are both not very developed. Of course, this could be because the book is an extremely short one and I felt the story was rushed.
Overall, the message was a good one, but I wished there was more to the plot and characters.
I would recommend this to those who would like to read a short and simple Christmas time tale.
